The Joy of Menopause

During my busy days of meeting my clients, I’ve come to notice that the Menopause is an extremely hot topic for a lot of my clients at the moment and how it affects everyone so differently. From random hot flushes and severe sweating, to being extremely emotional and suffering with skin issues. I’ve decided to shed some light on this glorious subject that us women endure to help you understand your skin better through this change.

What is the Menopause?

As most of us all know, the Menopause is when your period stops due to lower hormone levels. This can usually happen between ages 40-55, or in some cases you can become perimenopausal at an earlier age before your periods have stopped. This can include symptoms such as brain fog, weight gain, hot flushes, mood swings, skin problems and irregular periods. This can often have a major impact on your life, including relationships and work.

During the Menopause, your skin can undergo many changes and once it sets in, you can expect to lose almost one third of your collagen in just 5 years!

Skin changes can occur such as:

  • Dryness and itching due to your outer layer of skin becoming less efficient at holding water and oestrogen levels dropping, making your skin irritated and very dry.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles appearing as your collagen levels reduce more dramatically
  • Increased sweating, redness and flushing due to hormone fluctuations
  • Acne outbreaks from a rise in cortisol levels
  • Hair loss due to your oestrogen and progesterone rapidly declining, which is responsible for promoting healthy hair growth

While all these things are inevitable when it comes to ageing, there are ways that we can help slow down the process by including simple things:

  • Staying hydrated – keeping your skin and body hydrated helps to flush out toxins, keeps your skin feeling plumper and smoother and reduces bloating
  • Eating a rich diet – including a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants will help to make you feel fuller for longer (aiding in weight gain) and feed your body the nutrients it needs to thrive better when going through the change. Supplementing with good quality ingredients is also recommended if you don’t get enough from your normal diet!
  • Avoiding trigger foods such as caffeine, alcohol, high sugar/spice foods to prevent further excessive flushing, redness and acne breakouts
  • Including mobility exercise in your routine to help with overall muscle strength and sweating
