SkinPen FAQs

What is SkinPen?

SkinPen is a type of microneedling treatment which uses tiny microneedles that when inserted into the skin hundreds to thousands of times per minute, it triggers a controlled wound healing response. The area will then go through various phases to repair itself, including producing a type of collagen specifically designed to remodel your skin to a more youthful state.

As your skin tissue repairs, it releases the connective tissue associated with scars to help remodel the skin and reduce acne scarring. SkinPen stimulates our growth factors, which is the process that supports the healing and repairing of skin cells, so our skin starts to behave as it did when we were younger. This results in stronger, healthier, thicker skin over time.

Who is SkinPen suitable for?

SkinPen is great for acne scarring, uneven skin tone and texture, surgical scars, signs of ageing and anyone is who is looking for prevention/general skin rejuvenation.

Who is SkinPen not suitable for?

Due to this treatment requiring the skin to heal, this is not recommended for:

  • Anyone that has had cancer or undergone chemotherapy/radiotherapy in the last 2 years
  • Circulatory disorders (due to there being very small amounts of bleeding)
  • Current infections
  • Areas of broken skin/open wounds
  • Auto immune disorders
  • Pregnancy/breastfeeding
  • Having regular high sun exposure

Most of these reasons are due to lack of the body/skins ability to heal well and higher risk of infection.

Does it hurt?

The thought of having fine needles inserted into the skin doesn’t sound too appealing, does it? Not to worry though, we use anaesthetic cream on the area beforehand, so you’ll barely feel it!

How often do I have to have SkinPen?

This would depend on the concern being treated. If we are treating acne scars or pigmentation, you can expect to have treatments every 4-6 weeks until the concern is treated. With ageing it’s as little as a treatment every 3-6 months. This treatment can be instead of, or alongside your regular facials. Just ask your therapist what’s best for you and they will advise accordingly.

What is included in the SkinPen consultation?

Having a consultation is extremely important and plays a key part in your skin journey. During the consultation we will assess your suitability, discuss realistic results, timescales and treatment plans alongside doing an essential patch test of the numbing cream and informing you of important pre and post information. The price you pay for the consultation is fully redeemable against any future SkinPen treatments you have within 2 months of your consultation. Once you have had one consultation and continue to have regular treatments, you won’t need a new consultation unless 6 months has lapsed since your last SkinPen treatment with us.

What is the downtime for SkinPen?

Because of the wound healing response that the skin experiences there is some down time after your treatment, usually 1-2 days. This includes symptoms of a mild sunburn – this may be redness, tenderness, tightness and peeling in areas. These are all completely normal and is a sign of the healing and remodelling process.
